Horizontal progress means copying things that work – going from 1 to n. It's easy to copy things that already exist, but it rarely leads to real breakthroughs. Vertical progress is doing new things – going from 0 to 1. This is much harder, but it's where true innovation and value creation happen. Vertical progress is essential because it allows us to create something entirely new that didn't exist before. It's about taking risks and thinking outside the box to come up with groundbreaking ideas. Horizontal progress, on the other hand, is just about incremental improvements on existing ideas. It might make things a little bit better, but it doesn't change the game.
